Alleged Stalker Inquired: 'But Imagine I Am Madeleine?'
A female indicted with pursuing Kate McCann reportedly deposited her a voicemail message which posed: "imagine I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who witnesses stated has repeatedly declared she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial indicted with harassing Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February 2025.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court was told call records and information retrieved from phones documented Ms Wandelt consistently asking Madeleine's mother for a biological test throughout 2023 and 2024.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - when she was three years old during a vacation in Portugal - is one of the most widely reported missing child cases and is still unsolved.
'I Do Not Need Money'
One voicemail, shared in court, documented Ms Wandelt declaring: "I realize I'm fat and not pretty like Madeleine was, but I believe what I know."
While one recording of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's answerphone said: "Suppose there is a slight possibility that I am Madeleine? What then? Isn't that significant for you?"
"I don't want money, I have a life here in Poland, I only wish to discover," the message continued.
The panel was told that via electronic messages, text messages and communications, Ms Wandelt asked for a genetic test, sent childhood photos to her phone in a attempt to demonstrate a resemblance to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and claimed to have "recollections" from a early life with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, a data specialist with Leicestershire Police who gathered the data, informed the court there "didn't appear to be any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt additionally reached out to close associates of the McCanns, as per the communication logs.
On October 9th, 2024, Mr McCann answered a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, stating she had "the wrong phone."
That day Ms Wandelt deposited a recording on Mrs McCann's voicemail declaring "I will continue and I will prove my point."
The court learned Mrs Spragg struck up a association via internet with Ms Wandelt before joining her on a trip to the McCanns' property in Leicestershire in that winter.
Communication data showed Mrs Spragg had communicated using WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to say the news outlets had characterized Ms Wandelt as "mentally unstable" but that she deserved to be treated respectfully in the months leading up to the visit to Rothley, Leicestershire, in December 2024.
The court learned correspondence between the two defendants, in November 2024, discussing trying to get Mrs McCann's genetic material from her garbage or from cutlery at a restaurant.
"We must assert ourselves," the co-defendant informed Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the appearance to their house, the defendant sent a text which expressed: "We're currently positioned adjacent to the McCanns' house with our lights out resembling investigators. I desired to achieve this with Peter Andrew I didn't imagine I would be involved in this with the McCanns."
The trial continues.
