Many in Cameroon show outrage over the fact that Paul Biya has won an eighth presidential term

Cameroon's Interior Minister the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over claims that he instigated "aggressive electoral rallies".

At least 4 demonstrators have been lost their lives during skirmishes between law enforcement and demonstrators since the electoral process on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya obtaining an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he was the true winner, a statement disputed by the governing party, the CPDM.

Forceful measures by security personnel on protesters have worried the international community, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union calling for restraint.

Minister's Claims

On Tuesday, Nji alleged Tchiroma Bakary of coordinating what he labeled "illegal" demonstrations causing the fatalities, and also criticised him for declaring victory in the presidential race.

He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "accomplices involved in an rebellious scheme" will also undergo judicial processes.

Poll Figures

The president, who took control in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, secured the 12 October vote with 53.7% of the ballots, compared to 35.2% for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

The opposition figure is has not yet commented to the government's decision to bring him to court, but he had before announced that he refused to acknowledge a fraudulent outcome - and that he was fearless of being arrested.

On election result day, he said that armed men used lethal force on protesters present near his home in the city of Garoua, killing at least 2 civilians.

Inquiry Launched

Earlier this week, the government official announced that an probe would be launched into violent incidents prior to and following the announcement of the vote outcome.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the criminals died," he said, without giving a specific number of protesters who have been fatally injured in the confrontations.

The minister noted that a number of personnel of the security forces also suffered serious injuries.

Current Situation

While Nji maintained the condition nationwide was now stable, demonstrators continue to protest in certain regions of the country, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators mounted barricades on Tuesday, and burnt rubber on the thoroughfares.

Analysts warn that the political turmoil could plunge the country into a leadership vacuum.
