Google Plans Investment of $15bn to Build AI Data Hub in the Indian Subcontinent

Computing Infrastructure
India ranks as a top choice for data centers because of its affordable data rates and swiftly increasing online population.

Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. is set to invest $15 billion to establish an artificial intelligence data center in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

The facility, to be established in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam city, is going to be a segment of Google's international system of AI centres distributed over twelve different countries.

"It's the largest AI hub that we plan to invest in anywhere in the world, outside of the United States," Google Cloud's chief executive said at an gathering in Delhi, the national capital on Tuesday, adding that the financial commitment is to be distributed across the coming five years.

This declaration comes at a time US President Donald Trump has been asking companies from the United States to give priority to investments within the country.

The Expanding Position of India in AI Computing

The country has risen as a prime location for AI data centres. India's affordable data pricing and rapidly growing online population have established it as a center for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for tech giants.

"The infrastructure will introduce our cutting-edge technology to companies and individuals in India, accelerating AI development and driving growth nationwide," stated Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.

Specifics of the Project

An official contract to finalise the initiative is set to be signed soon, local government officials confirmed.

"It constitutes a significant advancement for our state's digital future, progress, and worldwide position," remarked the technology official Minister Nara Lokesh.

The project will combine cloud and AI infrastructure with sustainable power solutions and an expanded fibre-optic network.

Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision

The project is included in the local administration's blueprint to establish 6 gigawatts of data center capability by 2029.

Data centers are physical facilities that contain the computer and network hardware that entities use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.

They contain computer servers, data storage systems and network equipment like firewalls and routers, along with the necessary power and cooling systems to function properly.

Financial Attractions

In Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been granting discounted land and power to draw worldwide funders.

Market Development

India's data centre industry has developed swiftly in the recent half-decade, crossing the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and nearly tripling its capability from 2019.
