Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
