Rare Red Electrical Discharge Recorded in Skies

A team of photography enthusiasts in New Zealand have successfully captured images of crimson flashes, one of the most elusive light phenomena globally, in which luminous crimson flashes become visible in the atmosphere.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists had originally set out to photograph the galactic core over the distinctive clay formations in the lower part of the country on 11 October, and unexpectedly witnessed the extraordinary event.

Initially believing they would be lucky to get clear skies that after-dark period, but their night became “an unforgettable one,” one photographer stated.

While reviewing his files for a stellar landscape and realized he had photographed crimson electrical bursts,” he said. “It was unbelievable – we experienced excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the night.”

Understanding Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are bursts of electrical energy in the higher atmospheric layers, produced by electrical storms. In contrast to lightning that aims at the surface, red sprites propel upward towards the mesospheric region, forming structures that look like columns, tapered shapes or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a this phenomenon was recorded – accidentally – in the late eighties, by a research unit at the a academic organization.

Brief and Dreamlike Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are rarely visible to the human sight, but an individual had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing straight toward one when it took place – pure chance observing the correct area of the heavens and I witnessed a short crimson illumination,” he commented.

Observing the phenomena was a dream for this individual, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It looks like you are observing something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is present only momentarily, so it is fascinating to see.”

Technical and Creative Mastery

Recording a such an event needs a expertise in technical photography, as well as an knowledge about atmospheric physics and innovative thinking, the individual stated. “It’s a really involved category of art that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

One of the other individuals remarked it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his existence. “I was able to observe the galactic band glowing above the skyline while these enormous red tendrils of energy swayed above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he said.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no further recordings showing crimson flashes and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.

“It represented a unique instance when you realize you are observing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
