Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the squad's ten-game winless beginning to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous associations to the club - are part of the names to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would create a possible obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the ex- Luton head coach - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves board as they begin the process of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United player is out of work meaning the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
