Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
The Cause of the Latest Dispute
Wilson's response came after Payton made comments following the Broncos' historic 33-32 victory over the Giants. The coach suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
