The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
