The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
