Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
